On Wine Tasting
Calvin Trillin wrote an essay on wine tasting in the New Yorker in August 2003. He described a blind tasting among wine experts in which red and white wines were served in black glasses, so the color of the wine was hidden. Trillin gloated that the experts could not always tell the difference between red and white wines, much less identify the grape and wine-growing region. Trillin's making fun of wine tasting was like striking out the pitcher.

It's That Time Again
(Today) Sunday, October 31, is the end of Daylight Saving Time for 2004, so we will have to re-set all of our clocks and watches. I am not looking forward to it. To my astonishment I found last April, when I reset our clocks to Daylight Savings Time, that our house has a total of 24 clocks, and 6 watches which have to be re-set. It takes almost an hour to reset them all. The hour gained with Daylight Saving Time is lost immediately. What can we possibly need 30 time pieces for?

Provincialism
The best site for information about foreign countries is the CIA site. The CIA says Singapore is 3.5 times the size of Washington D.C. Wouldn't you know that the CIA's frame of reference is Washington DC ?
