About Business Writing

Good business writing is four things. It is clear. It is interesting to read. It is credible. And it is persuasive.

Clarity comes first. Good business writing is not ambiguous. Whether it is describing or advocating, it must not be misunderstood.

Next, good business writing is interesting to read.

"Laird," a client told me once, "you take things that are grey and make them black and white."

He was describing how I approach my first point, clarity. By using an anecdote, in quotes, my writing becomes more interesting. Dialog, a tool of novelists, can make business writing come alive and adds credibility.

When business writing is clear, interesting, and credible, it is persuasive. Persuasiveness also comes from knowing your audience, and relating to them in your writing. Good business writing should be persuasive even it is only reporting an event. If you don't have a reason to write, don't.

I invite you to explore on this website, and with me personally, how I create clear, interesting, and credible business writing for a purpose and for an audience -- customers, investors, employees, the community -- you might want to persuade.
